Hunts Cove is an easy out-and-back hike in Oregon's Mount Jefferson Wilderness, within the Detroit Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest. The trail is managed by the Forest Service and sits at about 5,070 feet, with a high point of 5,265 feet and a total elevation gain of 377 feet over the course of the round trip. The route is short, about 1.7 miles long, and the steepest stretch comes early on, with a 13% grade at about 0.16 miles. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Santiam Junction, which sits roughly 1,500 feet lower, show July and August highs around 76°F with lows near 42°F. Winter is cold, with January highs around 38°F and lows near 24°F. The hike is open from June 1 through October 31, and the trip takes about an hour. Bikes are not allowed on the trail, which has a natural surface. Old Hunts Cove lies about 0.4 miles away, and the Hunts Cove Trail is about 1.1 miles off. Paddlers can head to Pamelia Creek, about 4.2 miles away, and campers to Riverside Campground, about 5.7 miles away.
