Howlock Mountain Trail is a hard hike in Oregon's Mount Thielsen Wilderness, part of the Diamond Lake Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail lies within designated wilderness. The route is an out-and-back of about 7 miles, with a total climb of roughly 2,859 feet. The trail starts near 7,280 feet and reaches a high point of about 7,291 feet, so the climb is steep from the outset, with the steepest stretch at about 0.12 miles in. That makes the trail a serious undertaking, and the round-trip elevation gain is about 2,859 feet. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Crater Lake show July and August highs around 69°F with only about four wet days a month, while winter months bring highs in the low 30s and rain on most days. Several other hikes sit within about 2 miles, including Thielsen Creek and Tipsoo Peak Trail. For an overnight stay, Digit Point Campground and Diamond Lake are both about 5 miles away.
