Howlock Mountain is a hard hike of about 6.6 miles in the Mount Thielsen Wilderness, part of the Diamond Lake Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest in Oregon. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is a natural-surface route that allows horses. The climb is an out-and-back with a total gain of about 1,646 feet. The route starts near 6,105 feet and reaches a high point of about 7,282 feet. The steepest stretch comes at about 1.9 miles in, with a grade of about 17 percent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Crater Lake show July and August highs around 69°F with only about four wet days a month, while winter months bring highs in the low 30s and rain on most days. Thielsen Creek lies just 0.1 mile away, and Howlock Mountain Trail and Spruce Ridge are both within about 1.5 miles. For an overnight base, Diamond Lake campground is about 3 miles off.
