Echo Basin is a moderate out-and-back hike in the Sweet Home Ranger District of Oregon's Willamette National Forest, about 2.8 miles long with a total elevation gain of 1,124 feet. The trail starts at Echo Basin Trailhead, which is open from June 1 to October 31, and the route reaches a high point of 4,829 feet. The climb is steepest at the start, with a 21% grade about 0.13 miles in, and the trail is natural-surfaced. Bikes are allowed. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Santiam Junction, which sits about 1,000 feet lower, show July and August highs around 76°F with lows near 42°F. Winter is cold, with January highs around 38°F and lows near 24°F. Nearby, the Santiam Wagon Road West and the Echo Creek Ski Tour are both within a mile, and Lost Prairie campground is about 0.8 miles away. Cougar Creek, a canoeing spot, is about 2.4 miles off.
