Deadwood is an easy out-and-back hike of about 1.2 miles in Oregon's Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness, within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The trail rises about 580 feet from a starting point of roughly 2,685 feet to a high of about 2,961 feet, with the steepest stretch coming within the first eighth of a mile, where the grade reaches 23%. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. A nearby weather station records typical July and August highs around 80°F with only a few wet days, and temperatures at the trail's elevation run cooler than that station's figures. Winter brings typical highs in the low 40s and rain on 16 or more days a month. The trip takes about half a day, and the route connects with Deadwood Trail #422, less than half a mile away, and Ridge Cut-Off, about 0.7 miles off. Wyeth Campground, about 1.4 miles away, offers a place to stay. Windy Slab, a climbing area roughly 2.6 miles away, is the closest spot for rock.
