Bulldog Rock is a hard hike of about 10 miles on an out-and-back route in the North Umpqua Ranger District of Oregon's Umpqua National Forest. The trail rises about 1,778 feet one way, with the high point at 5,928 feet, and the climb is front-loaded, getting steepest around mile 1.9, where the grade reaches 30%. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is natural-surface, so it's not paved. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Odell Lake put July and August highs in the mid-70s and lows in the mid-40s, with only about three wet days a month. Winter is cold and snowy, with highs around 35°F and snow days on about 10 days a month from December through February. The station sits roughly 1,100 feet lower than the high point, so temperatures up high run cooler. The hike is open from about June 1 to October 31, and it takes roughly five hours. Bikes and horses are allowed, but the trail is not accessible. Reynolds Shelter, about 2.8 miles away, and Bear Camp Shelter, about 3 miles off, offer camping, and Big Bend Creek, about 1.4 miles away, is a paddling option.
