May Apple Mayhem is a moderate, out-and-back hike in the Athens Ranger District of Wayne National Forest in Ohio. It covers about 5 miles, rising roughly 287 feet from a low of about 709 feet to a high of about 952 feet, and the steepest stretch comes at around 0.74 miles in, where the grade reaches about 15%. The trail is on natural surface and is open to bikes, but horses are not allowed. It is not accessible. The land is managed by the Forest Service, and the hike is open year-round. For comfortable weather, aim for late spring or early fall. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Athens put May highs around 72°F and September highs around 76°F, with September seeing the fewest wet days of the year.
