Flapping.../Nuclear arms is a climbing area in North Carolina, about a mile from the town of Quail Ridge. It sits among several other climbing spots, including the Lakeview Area, Rumbling Bald and the Hickory Nutcracker Area, all within about a tenth of a mile. That makes it easy to pair with climbs in the surrounding area. The area's climbing draws on both traditional and mixed styles, with routes ranging from 5.10a to 5.12a on the YDS scale. Seven routes are listed, among them Flappin' In the Breeze (mixed, 5.10a) and Nuclear Arms (trad, 5.10a/b), with Blowin' In The Wind (5.11a) and Slab Accurate (5.12a) rounding out the harder end. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from the nearby Lake Lure weather station show October highs around 72°F with lows near 47°F, and April is similar, while July highs reach about 88°F. The station sits a few hundred feet lower than the climbing area, so temperatures up here run slightly cooler.
