Tamarack is a cross-country skiing route in New York, about 1.3 miles from the small populated place of Shady Corner Curve. It's an easy out-and-back, roughly 0.78 miles long, with almost no change in elevation. The route starts and ends near 1,981 feet, and the high point is 1,984 feet. Winter is the natural season for this ski route. Typical averages from the nearby Lake Placid weather station run to highs around 23°F in January and 27°F in February, with lows near 6°F and 8°F. Those figures are from a station a few hundred feet lower than the route, so temperatures on the ski trail run slightly cooler. The Tamarack route sits among several other cross-country ski areas. Rabbit Run and Bear Trap are each about 0.1 mile away, and Lower Brookside is about 0.2 mile off. For a change of pace, the West Branch Ausable River is about 2.2 miles away and offers canoeing.
