The out-and-back trip is about a mile long, with a total climb of 193 feet from a low point of 1,968 feet to a high of 2,033 feet. The steepest stretch comes early, at about 0.18 miles in, with a grade of 3 percent. Winter is the natural season for this route. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Lake Placid show January highs around 23°F with lows near 6°F, while March runs a bit milder at highs around 36°F. The station sits a few hundred feet lower than the route's high point, so temperatures on the higher ground run a little cooler.
