Loop 12 is a short, easy hike in New York's Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve, managed by the State Department of Conservation. The route is 0.82 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 12 feet, and it runs flat for most of the way. It starts at about 104 feet and reaches a high point of 114 feet before ending at a lower point of 92 feet, so it works well as a quick walk or a warm-up before exploring the preserve's other trails. The most comfortable months for a visit are late spring and early fall. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Farmingdale show May highs around 68°F and September highs around 75°F, with September also seeing the fewest wet days of the year. The hike takes about half an hour to complete. Trail 12 Red lies just 0.1 mile away, and Loop 12 Ext and Loop 13 Blue are each about 0.2 mile off. For a longer outing, the Long Island Shoreline Route, a canoeing route, is about 8.6 miles away.
