Cross-Over Trail is a short, easy hike in New York's Split Rock Wild Forest, managed by the State Department of Conservation. The trail is an out-and-back of about 1.8 miles, with a total elevation gain of 411 feet, and it reaches a high point of 596 feet. The steepest stretch comes at about 0.55 miles in, with a grade of 12 percent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Vergennes, Vermont, show July highs around 83°F with lows near 61°F, and September cools to highs around 73°F. That station sits about 400 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the trail run a little cooler. The hike takes about an hour. Split Rock Canyon, a climbing area, is just 0.3 miles away, and the Calamity Trail and Barn Rock Trail are both within a mile. For an overnight stay, Button Bay State Park is about 2.9 miles off.
