The trail rises from a low point of 114 feet to a high of 596 feet, with a total elevation gain of 681 feet over the round trip. The climb is steepest near the start, with a 29% grade at about 0.33 miles, and the trail is rated moderate. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Vergennes, Vermont, show July highs around 83°F with lows near 61°F, while September cools to highs in the low 70s. That station sits about 400 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the ridge run cooler. The hike takes about 1.5 hours. Cross-Over Trail and Gary's Elbow Trail both lie within a mile, and Split Rock Canyon offers climbing about 0.9 miles away. For an overnight stay, Button Bay State Park is about 2.3 miles off.
