Avalanche Pass Trail is a 3.6-mile moderate hike in the High Peaks Wilderness of New York, managed by the State Department of Conservation. The trail rises from about 2,936 feet to about 3,006 feet, with a total elevation gain of 446 feet. The steepest stretch comes at about 2.5 miles, where the grade reaches 55 percent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Lake Placid show July highs around 74°F and lows near 54°F, while temperatures on the pass run cooler than that station's figures. The Avalanche Lake Ski Trail starts just 0.1 mile away, and the Lake Colden Ski Trail and Mt Colden climbing area are both within a mile. Wright Peak is about 1.3 miles off.
