South Central is a climbing area in the Organ Mountains Wilderness of southern New Mexico, on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management's Las Cruces District Office. It sits within the wilderness, and several other climbing areas lie right beside it, including Grandpa Smith Boulder, Smith Family Boulders and Outcast Cave and Ledge, all about 0.1 mile away. The climbing here is mostly bouldering, with seven boulder problems and one sport route among the eight routes listed. The boulders range from V2- to V7 on the V scale, with Shock and Awe at V5 and Dyno Dick at V7 among the more challenging options. The sport route is rated 5.11- on the YDS scale. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show April highs around 78°F and October highs around 80°F, while June and July average highs near 96°F. That station sits about 800 feet lower than the climbing area, so temperatures up high run cooler. For a change from the rocks, the Soledad Canyon Multi-Use Path and Sierra Vista Trail are both about 5 miles away, and the Gasline Road mountain biking route is about 7 miles off.
