Cookes Peak Trail is a hard, out-and-back hike on Bureau of Land Management land in the Las Cruces District Office in southern New Mexico. The route is 7.1 miles long, and it gains about 2,828 feet from the trailhead to the summit of Cookes Peak, which sits at 8,404 feet. The lowest point on the route is around 5,532 feet, which gives the hike a steep climb of roughly 2,800 feet over a little more than 7 miles. Because of the climb, the hike is rated hard. It's a long, challenging day, so plan on allowing plenty of time and bringing enough water and supplies for a round trip. The peak is high, and that means cold nights and changing weather conditions are to be expected. Several other trails lie within a few miles, including the CDT, the CDT JRM, the Frying Pan Spring Trail and the Butterfield Trail.
