Toyn Creek is a 9.8-mile out-and-back hike in Nevada's Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, on the Mountain City-Ruby Mountains-Jarbidge Ranger District. The trail rises from a low point of about 6,088 feet to a high of about 6,981 feet, a climb of about 890 feet, and the Forest Service manages the land. The route is gravel and allows biking, so it works for hikers and riders alike. It's a hard hike by any measure, and the climb adds up over the full length of the route. The most comfortable stretch runs from late spring through early fall. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Ruby Lake show June highs around 78°F and September highs around 77°F, with July the warmest month at about 88°F. That station sits roughly 1,000 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures up top run cooler. The Toyn Shortcut lies less than a mile away, and the Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail and Harrison Pass climbing area are each about 5 miles off. Gilbert Creek is a little farther, at about 5 miles.
