Carpenter Boulder is a bouldering area in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness, part of the Bozeman Ranger District of Custer Gallatin National Forest in Montana. The Forest Service manages the land, and the area sits within designated wilderness, so expect to plan around the rules that go with that status. The climbing here is all bouldering, with 11 routes spread across the V0 to V8 range. The easiest is Tonka Trucks at V0, and the hardest is Carpenter's Direct at V8. Carpenter's Traverse is a V6 route. The names of the boulders and the grades of the problems are the anchors of the climbing here. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Big Sky run to highs around 78°F in July and 77°F in August, with lows in the low 40s. Winters are cold, with January highs near 30°F and lows around 9°F. Two other bouldering areas, Explosive Boulder and Lava Pit, sit about 0.1 mile away. Table Mountain is a hike 0.8 mile off, and the Gallatin River offers fishing about 1.8 miles away.
