Pterodunktyl Boulder(s)

Pterodunktyl Boulder(s) is a bouldering area in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness, part of the Bozeman Ranger District of Custer Gallatin National Forest in Montana. The Forest Service manages the land, and the area sits within designated wilderness, so expect to plan around the rules that go with that status. The climbing here is all bouldering, with five routes spread across the V0 to V8 range. The most notable is Pterodunktyl itself, a V7 boulder, and T-Rexy and I Know It, a V8. Bear Face is the easiest at V0, and Mr. Delicate is a V5. The routes are close together, with Cascade Creek and Explosive Boulder both about 0.2 miles away. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Big Sky run to highs around 78°F in July, with lows near 41°F. That station sits about 500 feet lower than the boulders, so temperatures on the rock run a little cooler. Other options are close by. Table Mountain is a hike 0.7 miles away, and the Gallatin River offers fishing about 1.9 miles off. Greek Creek campground is 2.6 miles away, and the Pioneer Lakes Trail is 2.4 miles away.
