Old Middlesex Turnpike is a short, easy mountain biking route in Massachusetts, about 1.7 miles from North Billerica. It's an out-and-back ride of roughly 0.6 miles, with a total elevation gain of about 69 feet, so it works well as a quick stop or a warm-up before heading to other spots in the area. The climb is gentle, with the steepest stretch at about 0.07 miles from the start, where the grade reaches 8 percent. The route starts at around 192 feet and peaks at about 225 feet before returning to the starting point. For comfortable weather, late spring and early fall are the best bets. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Lowell show May highs around 70°F and September highs around 76°F, with July the warmest month at about 85°F. Several other destinations sit close by. Rt 3 Overlook is about 0.7 miles away, and Yellow Rabbit is about a mile off. The Middlesex Canal Trail is about 1.5 miles away for hikers, and Brookside, a cross-country ski area, is about 1.6 miles away.
