Wheeler Brook is a 7-mile out-and-back hike in the Androscoggin Ranger District of Maine's White Mountain National Forest. The trail rises from a low point of about 680 feet to a high of 2,016 feet, with a total elevation gain of 2,236 feet over the round trip. The climb is front-loaded, and the steepest stretch comes at about 1.6 miles in, where the grade reaches 25 percent. The trail is natural-surface and not accessible. Bikes are allowed, so it works for hikers and riders alike. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Pinkham Notch weather station in New Hampshire, at a similar elevation, run to highs around 75°F in July and 74°F in August, with lows in the low 50s. The Wheeler Brook East Trailhead is the starting point, and the trail is open year-round. Plan for about 3.5 hours on the round trip. Climbers will find The Hippo Boulder and Tumble Down Dick Mt. about 0.6 miles away. The Caribou and McCoy-Grey Birch Trail hikes are each about 2 miles off. Hastings Campground, roughly 4 miles away, is the closest place to camp.
