West Mountain is a hard hike in Idaho's Boise National Forest, on the Emmett Ranger District. The trail is about 22 miles long, and it rises from roughly 5,387 feet to about 8,105 feet, so the total climb is nearly 3,900 feet. The Forest Service manages the land. The route is natural-surface and allows both horses and bikes, which makes it an option for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. The climb is an out-and-back, and the numbers are set by the trail's one-way distance and elevation gain, so plan on covering that whole stretch twice if you take the full route. Several other destinations sit close by. Wilson Creek and Willow Creek are hikes within about 2 miles. French Creek campground is about 4 miles away, and the Cascade Ranger District and Office offers river fishing about 6 miles out.
