Trail A is a hard hike in the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, managed by the Forest Service. The route is a loop of about 9 miles, with a total elevation gain of 721 feet from a low point of 2,621 feet to a high of 3,302 feet. It is a long, steady climb, and the trail is rated hard. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Coeur d'Alene show July and August highs around 83°F with only about four wet days a month, while winter highs sit in the mid-30s. That station sits roughly 1,200 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the route run cooler. The trip takes about 3.5 hours. Bikes are allowed.
