Rip and Tear is an easy out-and-back hike of about 2.4 miles on natural surface in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, part of the Sawtooth National Forest in Idaho. The trail rises about 64 feet from its low point at 7,353 feet to a high of 7,706 feet, and bikes are allowed. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Stanley put July and August highs around 80°F with only five to six wet days a month, and the station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the route run cooler. Winters are cold, with January highs near 29°F. Spring Creek Trail, a mountain biking route, starts just 0.1 mile away, and the Spring Creek and Outhouse Loop hikes are within a third of a mile. For an overnight base, Chemeketan Campground is about 6 miles off.
