Elkhorn Mountain is an easy out-and-back hike of about 4.2 miles in Idaho's Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, on the West Fork Ranger District of the Bitterroot National Forest. The trail is managed by the Forest Service and runs on natural surface. The route starts at a low point of about 7,892 feet and climbs to a high point of about 8,138 feet, with a total elevation gain of about 123 feet. That makes it a short, low-effort outing rather than a steep climb. The surrounding wilderness and the West Fork Ranger District make this a remote destination. Wendover Campground, about 2.6 miles away, is the closest place to camp. Eakin Ridge, Waugh Mtn-West Horse and Elkhorn Spring are all within about 2 miles and make good additions to a longer day in the area.
