Dry Elk is a hard hike in the Palisades Ranger District of Idaho's Caribou-Targhee National Forest, about 6.6 miles from the trailhead. The route is an out-and-back that climbs from about 6,132 feet to about 8,510 feet, with a total gain of 2,374 feet. The trail is on natural surface and allows both horses and bikes, according to the Forest Service's trail records. That makes it a versatile option for riders and pack animals. Several other trails sit close by. South Fork Rainey Creek and North Fork Rainey Creek are each about 0.8 miles away, and Spring Canyon is about 1.3 miles off. For an overnight base, Pine Creek Campground is about 5.8 miles away.
