Buck Creek is a hard hike of about 11 miles in the Cascade Ranger District of Idaho's Boise National Forest, managed by the Forest Service. The trail is an out-and-back that gains roughly 1,800 feet, starting at a low point of about 6,900 feet and rising to around 8,400 feet. The route is on natural surface and allows both bikes and horses, so it works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. The climb is the main challenge here, and the trail's length and elevation gain make it a serious outing rather than a casual day on foot. Pistol Lake is the closest neighbor, about 4 miles away. Summit, Indian Creek and Caton Lake are all within about 6 miles and make good additions to a longer trip through the district.
