The route is a point-to-point walk rather than a loop, and it is back-loaded, with the steepest part near the end. It starts at 564 feet and reaches a high point of 571 feet before descending to 298 feet. The climb is gentle overall, with the steepest section coming at about 0.89 miles, where the grade reaches 13%. The total elevation gain is 264 feet, and the total loss is 412 feet, so the hike is a little more downhill than uphill. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from the nearby Storrs weather station show May highs around 68°F and September highs around 73°F, with July peaking near 80°F. Winter is cold, with January highs around 35°F. The hike takes about half an hour. Lynch's Landing Trails is less than a mile away, and the River Trail and Water Line Trail are each about 2.5 miles off. Paddlers can find the Hop River roughly 3.9 miles away.
