Piney Designated Dispersed Site is a Forest Service campground in the Holy Cross Ranger District of Colorado's White River National Forest. It sits in designated dispersed camping, and no fees are required to use it. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Vail, which sits about 1,100 feet lower, show July highs around 77°F with lows near 42°F, while winter highs stay in the 20s. The Lost Lake to Piney hike starts less than a mile away, and the Mount Powell hike is about a mile off.
