Flagpole East Side is a climbing area in the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of California's national forest system, managed by the Forest Service. It sits among a cluster of climbing spots on the east side of the basin, with the Lower East Side about a tenth of a mile away and Mid Dome about 0.2 miles off. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Dagget Pass run to highs around 75°F in July, with lows near 49°F, and only about one or two wet days a month in late summer. The station sits a few hundred feet lower than this area, so temperatures here run slightly cooler. The Gunmount Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail both pass within a mile, and the Upper Truckee River offers canoeing about 3 miles away. Fallen Leaf Campground is about 6 miles off.
