Volcanic Knob is a 2.9-mile out-and-back hike in California's John Muir Wilderness, within the High Sierra Ranger District of the Sierra National Forest, managed by the Forest Service. The trail gains about 660 feet from its low point of 10,261 feet to a high point of 10,775 feet, and it is rated hard. The route is natural-surfaced and not accessible. Horses are allowed, but bikes are not. The trip is open year-round. The closest neighbors are Mono Creek, a canoeing spot about 1.7 miles away, and the Mono Creek Trail, about 2.5 miles off. Farther afield are the Sierra Eastside climbing area at 4.6 miles and Vermillion Campground at 6.6 miles.
