Second Recess is a 3.1-mile out-and-back hike in the John Muir Wilderness, part of the High Sierra Ranger District of Sierra National Forest in California. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail lies within designated wilderness. The route gains about 600 feet, from roughly 8,500 to 9,100 feet. It is a moderate hike on natural surface, and horses are allowed. Bikes are not. The trail is not accessible. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Mammoth Lakes show July highs around 78°F with lows near 49°F. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the ridge run cooler. Laurel Lake is about 0.4 miles away and Mono Creek about 0.9 miles. The Sierra Eastside climbing area is about 1.9 miles off, and Mosquito Flat Backpacker Campground is about 6 miles away.
