Hobart Loop is an expert-level out-and-back hike in the Truckee Ranger District of Tahoe National Forest, managed by the Forest Service. The route is about 17.6 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 3,052 feet, and it starts at roughly 6,271 feet. The climb is steady, and the steepest stretch comes at about 5.8 miles, where the grade reaches 15 percent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Sagehen Creek weather station, which sits a few hundred feet lower, show July highs around 80°F with lows near 37°F, while winter highs stay in the low 40s. Sagehen Nordic Loop is about 1.3 miles away, and the Commemorative Overland Emigrant Trail is about 2.1 miles off. Prosser Creek, a canoeing spot, is about 3 miles away, and Lakeside (Truckee) campground is about 3.6 miles away.
