Grouse is a 3.4-mile out-and-back hike in California's Desolation Wilderness, part of the Pacific Ranger District of Eldorado National Forest. The trail climbs from a low point of 7,559 feet to a high of 8,701 feet, a gain of 1,122 feet, and is rated moderate. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route is on natural surface with no bikes allowed. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Dagget Pass, Nevada, show July highs around 75°F with lows near 49°F and only about two wet days a month. That station sits roughly 1,367 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the summit run cooler. The hike starts close to Wrights Lake, a climbing area about 0.2 miles away, and Twin Lakes, another hike at 0.4 miles. Black Beauty Wall, a climbing area, is 0.5 miles off, and Wrights Lake Equestrian Campground is 1.9 miles away.
