Forty Tie is an easy out-and-back hike in California's Tahoe National Forest, within the Truckee Ranger District. The trail is about 2.8 miles long, with a one-way elevation gain of 556 feet, and it rises from a low point of 6,934 feet to a high of 7,493 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route is on natural surface, with biking allowed. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the Sagehen Creek weather station, about a mile away, show July highs near 80°F with lows around 37°F, while winter highs stay in the low 40s. That station sits roughly 1,150 feet below the trail's high point, so temperatures on the ridge run cooler. The hike starts close to Sagehen View, just 0.1 mile away. Within a few miles you'll also find the Carpenter Valley Trail for mountain biking, the Prosser Hill climbing area and Prosser Creek for canoeing.
