Crater Lake is a short, easy out-and-back hike in the High Sierra Ranger District of Sierra National Forest in California, managed by the Forest Service. The trail is about 0.34 miles long, with a low point of 7,344 feet and a high of 7,488 feet, so the climb is a gentle 121 feet one way. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Huntington Lake weather station show July and August highs around 74°F with lows near 49°F and only one or two wet days a month. That station sits about 468 feet lower than the high point, so temperatures on the trail run a little cooler. Florence Lake is about half a mile away, and Jackass Meadow campground is about 0.6 miles off. Thompson Lake and Ward Lake are both within about 2 miles.
