Herring Reservoir Campground is a Forest Service site in the mixed conifer forest near Herring Reservoir in California's Stanislaus National Forest, within the Summit Ranger District. It sits on Forest Road 4N12, about 9 miles from the Summit Ranger Station. The closest turn is off Highway 108, about 3 miles from the station on Herring Creek Road (4N12), which is the route to the campground. The site has nine camping spots, each with a table and a fire ring. Vault toilets are the only restroom option, and potable water is not available. The main road and parking pads are dirt-surfaced, so plan for that when you arrive. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show July and August highs around 75°F with lows near 60°F and only about one wet day a month. Winters are cold, with January highs around 44°F and lows near freezing. The closest neighbor is Herring Creek Campground, about 0.3 miles away. The Trail of the Gargoyles Interpe hike starts about 0.6 miles off. Pinecrest Lake, a climbing area, lies about 3.6 miles away, and the Middle Fork Stanislaus River offers canoeing about 5.2 miles out.
