About Coronado Trail Scenic Byway

The Coronado Trail Scenic Byway is a 115.8-mile drive in eastern Arizona that passes through the towns of Morenci, Alpine and Nutrioso. It holds three designations: National Scenic Byway, Arizona State Scenic Byway and National Forest Scenic Byway. Part of the route crosses national forest land, and at over a hundred miles it makes a full day's drive with plenty of places to stop along the way. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. A nearby weather station at Clifton (3,520 feet) records typical average highs around 81°F with lows near 51°F in April, and about 83°F and 55°F in October. Summer there often reaches 100°F, and July and August bring the most wet days. Temperatures along higher stretches of the byway may run cooler than at Clifton. Campgrounds and trailheads sit right along the road. Hannagan Campground and Strayhorse Campground are both within a few hundred yards of the route. Aker Lake has both a hiking trail and a fishing site, and Hulsey Lake Fishing Site lies about a mile off the byway.
