Hannagan Campground sits at 9,100 feet in the Alpine Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in eastern Arizona, managed by the Forest Service. It is one of the highest campgrounds in the state, and its alpine setting is evident in the high-country trees that shade the site: Colorado Blue and Engelmann spruce, subalpine and corkbark fir, and quaking aspen. The weather here stays cool, even in summer. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Alpine, which sits about 950 feet lower, show July and August highs around 78°F with lows in the upper 40s, while winter highs hover in the mid-40s. The station's figures are a guide, and temperatures at the campground run cooler. Vault toilets are the only amenity. There is no fee to camp here. Several trails and destinations lie within a short distance. The Hannagan Meadow Loop and Aker Lake are both about 0.2 miles away, and the Horseshoe Cienega cross-country ski area is just 0.2 miles off. Kp Cienega Campground is about 4.4 miles away.
