Sky Islands Traverse is a hard, out-and-back hike in Arizona's Coronado National Forest, within the Douglas Ranger District. The route is about 1,052 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 2,805 feet, and it rises from a low point of about 2,825 feet to a high of 10,009 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trailhead is at Cochise Stronghold. The climb is long and steep, and the route is not for the faint of heart. Bikes and horses are not allowed, so plan on hiking it on foot. The Cochise Stronghold Trailhead is the starting point, and the surrounding area offers plenty to pair with the hike. Cochise Stronghold campground and the Old Standard Area (aka the Bath Room Boulders) are both about 0.1 mile away. Shaw House campground and Middlemarch Canyon are each about 0.7 mile off.
