Salthouse is an 11-mile out-and-back hike in the Clifton Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in eastern Arizona, about 2.5 miles from the small community of Strayhorse. The trailhead is named Salt House Trailhead (#18), and the trip climbs from a low of about 6,133 feet to a high of 9,162 feet, a gain of roughly 2,625 feet one way. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route is rated expert, so plan on a long, steep day. The trail is open year-round and is a natural-surface route that allows horses and bikes. It is not an accessible trail. For the most comfortable conditions, aim for summer. Typical averages from the nearby Sunrise Mtn weather station, at about the same elevation, show July highs around 71°F with lows near 44°F. Winter is cold, with January highs around 42°F and lows near 11°F. Kp Cienega Campground sits about 0.7 miles away, and the Kp hike starts about 0.8 miles off. Strayhorse Campground is roughly 2.6 miles away, and the Crabtree Park Trail is about 1.8 miles from the trailhead.
