The Maxwell hike is a moderate, out-and-back route on natural surface in the Mogollon Rim Ranger District of Arizona's Coconino National Forest. It rises from a low point of 5,984 feet to a high of 6,727 feet, with a total gain of 1,735 feet over a 1.3-mile round trip. The steepest stretch comes at about half a mile in, with a grade of 45%. For timing, late spring and early fall are the most comfortable. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at a similar elevation show May highs around 70°F and September highs around 76°F, with lows near 38°F and 46°F. The trip takes about 1.5 hours. The West Clear Creek and John Doe Wall climbing areas sit within a mile, and the Tramway and Coyote Trail hikes are also close by.
