Lanphier is a hard hike in the Alpine Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in eastern Arizona, managed by the Forest Service. The trail is about 11 miles long, with an elevation gain of roughly 1,700 feet, and it is an out-and-back route that climbs from about 5,600 feet to about 7,400 feet. The trail surface is natural, and the route is not accessible. Horses are allowed, but bikes are not. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run to highs around 75°F in May and 79°F in September, while July and August bring the most wet days of the year, about 14 and 15. Several other hikes start close by, including S Canyon about a tenth of a mile away and Largo and Sawmill within a mile and a half. For an overnight stay, Blue Crossing Campground is about 3 miles off.
