The Pinhoti Trail is a hard hike in Alabama, about 2.4 miles from the town of Unity. It is an out-and-back route of about 10 miles, with a total elevation gain of 816 feet. The trail starts at roughly 792 feet and reaches a high point of 963 feet, and the steepest stretch comes at about 2.2 miles in, where the grade reaches 20 percent. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show October highs around 74°F with lows near 52°F, and April is similar at about 75°F by day and 50°F at night. That station sits about 360 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the higher ground run cooler.
