Hilltop

Perched at 5,702 feet in the Chiricahua Mountains near the Arizona–New Mexico border, Hilltop is a ghost town in Cochise County, Arizona. The settlement took root in the 1880s and found its footing as a mining town through the early 1900s, before a long economic slide finally emptied the community by the 1940s. A post office opened here on June 26, 1920, a reminder that Hilltop once supported a functioning local population.

Today the site offers the quiet atmosphere typical of Arizona's high-elevation ghost towns — remnants of a former community set against mountain terrain. Visitors drawn to historic mining settlements and remote scenery will find it a worthwhile stop, though the sparse surviving record suggests modest physical remains. Access to a location at this elevation near the state line typically requires a reliable vehicle and some advance research into current road conditions, and the most comfortable window for a visit runs from late spring through early fall.
