South Maricopa Mountains Wilderness Area

South Maricopa Mountains Wilderness Area spans 60,448 acres of federally protected backcountry in Arizona, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive, non-motorized country—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors come here to hike and backpack through remote desert terrain, seeking solitude and a genuine wilderness experience far from developed infrastructure.

The wilderness operates under strict Leave No Trace principles. All travel is by foot, and you must be entirely self-sufficient. There are no maintained facilities, trailheads with amenities, or ranger stations.
