Clifty Wilderness

Clifty Wilderness is a 12,551-acre federally protected wilderness in Kentucky, managed by the Forest Service. As a designated wilderness area, it preserves primitive backcountry where motors, mechanized travel, and developed infrastructure are prohibited—only foot travel and non-motorized use are allowed.

The wilderness offers hiking and backpacking opportunities for visitors seeking solitude and untrammeled backcountry experience. Access is limited to non-motorized routes, and all visitors are expected to follow Leave No Trace principles to protect the landscape's wilderness character.

Visit during warmer months when conditions are most favorable for backcountry travel. Winter weather can create hazardous conditions. Plan ahead: there are no roads, facilities, or motorized access points within the wilderness itself, so self-sufficiency and wilderness skills are essential.
