Bovine Area is a climbing area in West Virginia, managed by the Army Corps of Engineers and sitting about 1.4 miles from the town of Neponset. It is a cluster of named walls, with Rigor Wall, Bond Wall, Double-Tier Wall and Simpson Wall all within about a tenth of a mile. That makes it a compact base for climbers who want to move between several crags in a short stretch. The climbing here runs from trad routes on the easier end to sport routes that reach the 5.12a/b grade. The routes include Mad Cow Disease at 5.8, Bovine Crack at 5.10b and Love Burger at 5.11, with Tiers of Joy at 5.12a/b as the hardest. The area's mix of styles and grades gives climbers a range of options in one visit. For timing, September and October are the most comfortable months, with typical highs around 79°F and 68°F and fewer wet days than the rest of the year. Those figures are typical averages from a nearby weather station at Bluestone Lake, which sits a few hundred feet lower than the area.
