Double J is a short, easy out-and-back hike in Tennessee, about 0.6 miles from the town of Valdeau. The route is 2.4 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 185 feet, and it reaches a high point of 969 feet. The climb is gentle overall, with the steepest stretch at about 0.4 miles in, where the grade reaches 14 percent. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Chattanooga show October highs around 74°F with lows near 51°F, and April is similar at about 74°F by day and 50°F at night. That station sits roughly 300 feet lower than the hike's high point, so temperatures on the trail run a little cooler. Several other outings sit close by. The Cherokee Trail for mountain biking is about 0.2 miles away, and the Stringers Ridge Connector and Gig City hikes are each within half a mile. The Tennessee Riverwalk is about 1.9 miles off.
