Stout Tree Trail is an easy, out-and-back hike of about 2.9 miles on Bureau of Land Management land in the Prineville Deschutes Field Office in Oregon. The trail gains about 42 feet in elevation, so it's a gentle walk rather than a climb, and it starts and ends near the same elevation. The route is roughly 1.4 miles one way, and the steepest part comes early, at about 0.18 miles in, where the grade reaches 7 percent. Horses are allowed, and the surface is natural. Bikes are not, so plan on walking or riding a horse if you want to go this way. For comfortable weather, summer and early fall are the best bets. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Bend run to highs around 82°F in July and August, with September easing to about 74°F and only a few wet days a month. Winter is much colder, with January highs near 42°F and lows around 24°F. Several other trails sit close by, including the Lower Laidlaw Loop Trail about a tenth of a mile away and the Tumalo Canal Trail and Whiskey Still Ridge Trail within a mile. Climbers can head to Cline Falls Bouldering, about 5.5 miles off.
